PCLinuxPCLinuxOS WebsiteS TalkTalk from the Carphone Warehouse
About Me
Hi, I'm "davecs", but you can call me Dave. I'm a moderator at the PCLinuxOS web forums. My aim in creating this site is to talk about two aspects of my computing life.

The first is PCLinuxOS. That's the operating system I use on my computers. One is a Desktop, a little dated, running an Athlon XP2500+ processor, overclocked to XP3200+. The other is a Laptop, an Acer Aspire 1692 WLMi.

I have these computers connected, one hardwired, one wireless, to a LinkSys WAG54GS Router, in a semi-network, and connected to the Internet via TalkTalk Broadband.

I have other interests in my life, but unlike a lot of people I don't want to share my marriage, my job, my relationships, and my other interests with the world. So my aim is to use this webspace to talk about my "computing life" only.

PCLinuxOS
A revolution in Personal ComputingPCLinuxOS is a 32-bit Operating System (OS) which runs on 32-bit and 64-bit Personal Computers (PC). As its name suggests, it is an OS for your PC built on Linux. On most computers, it's easier to install than Windows (takes 10-15 minutes), a basic install contains LOADS of free software and occupies a fraction of the Hard Drive space demanded by Windows XP and Windows Vista. It's Free. And legally so, no dodgy stuff here at all.

The guy who puts most of it together relies entirely on voluntary donations, so he can (a) eat and (b) buy more computers to test the system on. He'll never get rich, but he's happy doing what he's doing. Want to read about why you should try PCLinuxOS, and how Linux can breathe life into a moderately old computer?

Well you can go to the PCLinuxOS Contents Page, or just jump straight to Part One. Enjoy.

TalkTalk
If TalkTalk were as good at Customer Service as they are at fancy adverts on the TV, they'd be great. When things go wrong they can be a nightmare. My story is a relatively unfraught one, not without bumps, but things are OK now. I do hope Carphone Warehouse come through their initial phase, because the only possible outcome if they succeed is that Broadband prices must collapse across the board. When I get around to it, I will write some stuff about my little bumps, and how I connected to TalkTalk using Linux, without using their accursed Connect and Go software.

How To Do Things
I intend to add some How-Tos for getting tasks done in Linux. Stuff about the programs waiting for you when you install PCLinuxOS, maybe how to turn this American Linux distro into a British one! That's a little way down the line yet.

I'll be adding to this page as I add to the site.

Best Wishes

davecs
